Experience at social security office

Received new EAD last week and went into the social security office to get a number. Lady took forever to process my application. Then she photocopied my EAD and birth certificate and said she has to send them to BCIS to see if their records match. She then gave me a letter saying I applied for a number on x date and they have to send my documents to the issuer and that it takes 60 days for this and if the documents are ok then they will issue me with a social security number in the mail, if not they will send me a letter saying why they can't issue me with a social security number. Has anyone who applied for a new social security number had such an experience? Let me know. I'm also hoping that it doesn't take them 60 days to issue me with a number after having to wait 5 months for EAD from BCIS.

Yes Similar Situation for spouse SSN.
They said about 120 days then (about six months back) and exactly in the line what they said to u. But we got the SSN in just 8 days or something .

Thanks for your response. I guess I have no choice but to wait and see how long it takes for them to issue that social security number.

NoVAguy, Social Security Office at random picks up applications from immigrants/visa holders to send to INS for verification. In such cases, the applicant is given a standard answer that their application will take six months for approval. Six months because the application and supporting documents have to go back and forth between two different departments. I know this because I know at least two people whose documents were sent to INS for verification. And One of them was me. I received my SSN after almost 12 weeks. So take heart.

If the social security number was applied within a month of first entry into US it will take 10 days, all other applicants have to wait longer- in some cases 3 months. For all the later category visa verification is done with BCIS without exceptions.

SSN

I had applied for EAD ( it was NOT after immediate enter into US ) and I have a very good experience of SSN office. The lady at the counter was very courteous. It took 3-4 minutes to enter/verify the info. into the system and photocopying the EAD card. I just carried Passport along with the EAD card. I was told to wait for 10 business days for the SSN in the mail. And indeed, it arrived on 6th business day!!

I believe the policy is not consistent and that is what everybody has very different experience!!

Yes. In our case for spouse SSN it was not immediate.May after 10 months.
The lady said have to verify VISA or something and she tried on her Computer and said she cannot see the information so will take 120 days..but got very soon some 6-10 days.

depends upon office to office of SS . Took only 5 minutes to apply and in a week got the the number. So it depend where you are going.

2 different things at same SSO

1. My wife got iEAD and applied for SSN same day. Lady copied her iEAD and said verification would take couple days to 60 days. She refused to give receipt until verification was confirmed.

One week later, we called SSO and asked about her number, lady checked the records and there was no application on file... DUH

Wife went in and showed iEAD again and applied for SSN. Lady checked the computer and iEAD matched the online verification (instantly), she was issued a receipt, SSN received in 10 days.

2. Got my iEAD and same day applied for SSN. Same story as above. Weary of wife's experience, I went to SSO 1 week later and confirmed existence of my application. Lady checked the computer and verified my iEAD online. She then issued me a receipt and said that my file was already in the system as of a few days ago. Called up the SSO 1800 number a few days later and received my SSN over the phone. Card came in a few days after that.

what does these social say? they usual " Valid for employment only with INS authorization?" or they are blank? just curious

Social Security Card still says "Valid for Employment only with INS Authorization". I guess one will have to wait till one receives a green card to get rid of this clause.
