If you're filing based on 5 year residency and Oct 4th is your 5th year anniversary , then you can apply no earlier than 90 days before (~July 4th).

Can you please tell me when you got your gc? Is it based on marriage, sponsoring employer, etc.?

What is your location of your residence? and any issue in your background history? like arrest, over 500 dollars fine citation tickets, etc?

so we can guide you.

Dear USGC485,

Thanks for the follow up questions,

I got GC (marriage based) on 6th Jan 2006. No arrests, No prior marriages, Traffic tickets (none over $500).

I m working on Federal projects since last 5 yrs, So, every year my my finger prints, checks etc.,are reviewed and I'm in the MD area.

Please let know when can I exactly start my application. I am planning on doing this myself.

You can send in your application 90 days before the 3 year anniversary of the GC date of issue. You can begin filling in your forms and gathering documents now, no problem. Just send it in no earlier than 90 days (better yet, a few days less than 90) before the 3 year mark.

That's good to know that your 5 years history is clean.

Is your spouse a US citizen?

If so, then you are eligible to apply for N-400 on Oct 6, 2008 (90 days from your 3rd anniversary of your gc-issued date).

If your spouse is not a US citizen, (assume your spouse is a US permanent resident), then you are eligible to apply for N-400 on Oct 6, 2010 (90 days from your 5th anniversary of your gc-issued date).

Dear USGC485

Appreciate your responses and congrats on your approval.

So, the rumors I heard that I could apply much before is incorrect I assume.

Can you point me to a checklist for the application? such as the list of documents etc., if there is any.

Thanks again.

Instructions and forms are available on USCIS website:

Instructions can be found at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/us...nnel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

and look at the upper right on the website of naturalization. you can see the checklist of documents. You should read the guideline to naturalization as well.

Instruction for N-400 is available at the bottom and form is available. Make sure to look at recent version date on the bottom of N-400 form. (note: USCIS won't accept any old version of N-400 form).

I can tell you what you need based on marriage beside the N-400 form:
1) photos (2 photos for n-400 and 2 photos for passport -- you can apply for passport later)
2) bills that show your name and your spouse's name jointly -- it will help officer to verify as bona-fide
3) marriage certificate
4) tax transcripts or tax returns (last 3 years, but last 5 years is better. just play to be safe)
5) any ticket citations if you have.
6) birth certificate
7) driver license (it is a must because officer will verify and match it on N400 and it is part of jurisdiction process)
8) your passport
9) any visa status -- it will help that you are not required to register Selective Services letter if you were in any valid non-immigrant status at the ages between 18 and 25. (Note: it is only for male, not female).
10) bank statement that shows your name and your spouse's name
11) lease agreement or mortgage paperwork
12) any change name proof if you want to change your name
13) your green card (and copy of your spouse's green card)
14) your social security card.

I guess that's it. Hope this helps. Good luck!
