What you might have read is that in some cases it's preferable to not use it if you have an alternative (e.g. an H visa -- this is my situation). As soon as you use the EAD, the H (or other) visas become invalid and you will need to apply for and receive Advance Parole (AP) to be able to travel without jeopardizing your I-485.
The EAD (AP) also needs to be renewed (yearly at this point and you really need to do this every 10 months or so to make sure you don't need to run out and get an iEAD at the local center). At some stage I believe you need to do fingerprinting to renew the EAD. All of this costs $$$ / time which is why I opted to simply stay on my H visa. Of course, this means that the clock is ticking on the 6 year H limit...
