EAD question

I have my H1B valid till sept 2006 but my lawyer applied for my EAD and it was approved, I have never used my EAD except for the fact that I just have one. Is my H1B cancelled ? since I was issued an EAD although I never used it to remain in status. Also how does the INS know what I am using to be status H1B or EAD ? if my H1B is cancelled will I get a cancellation notice or is my file updated to reflect the cancellation.

----- Having EAD while you have H1 is not problem if you have valid H1 then you are on H1 status if you dont use EAD, one can keep EAD and still can be on H1.
why the employer will cancell the H1? just having EAD is not the reason that USCIS will cancell the H1.
