I've never heard of anyone complaining or bragging about the "category" of Green Card they have or someone else has. A Green Card is a Green Card is a Green Card. It's a Permanent Resident visa, and no matter how you got it, you have the same rights and responsibilities. If you're applying for a job, and you're not a citizen, they want you to have Permanent Residency/Green Card - I doubt they'd ask how you got the Green Card, except out of mild curiosity, if it evens comes up in the conversation at all. Why would they care? Are you suggesting we're third-rate Permanent Residents compared to someone who got it because their sister sponsored them? I wouldn't worry about it. There are so many more important things to focus on when we get to the US.

Do you mean in the same sense as a cow would prefer greener grass? More colorful? Tastier? Fresher?

I have few family friends who are DV Green Card Holders and all of them are very happy and none of them have ever said anything about any kind of discrimination (other than 'generic racial stuff' (which is still prevalent in some areas)).
I also have a relative, who got Green Card through marrying a US girl and another relative who got through Asylum and one more who got after staying for 6 years (or so) in H1B. Through conversation with them, I realize that mostly Green Card DV is the best (in terms of time/money it takes).

If you have any specific question for them, do put it here, I will ask them. In general I haven't heard any kind of segregation of green card holders based on how they got one.

Absolutely. A couple of my friends in the US have described their experiences getting their Green Card and it sounds more like a nightmare. For all the complaining us DV winners might do ;), as we slog through the "long" process, from May 1st notification, to interview date, we have it so easy compared to most non-DV permanent residents. For some of them, it can take 10 years and many thousands in lawyer and other fees. Even those who get it in shorter time still don't get it as quick as we do, and they still pay so much more money. And some methods to the Green Card are complicated and it depends on whether the CO believes you're so necessary as an employee to the employer/company. I've heard the DV Green Card described as "the best visa money can't buy". That's about right.

This is actually a good question. Practically it won't matter what category of green card you have. It *might* make a difference while entering the country; when the officer looks at your card to see that you are DVx vs. E1x, the kind of questions he asks may change. He may question your ties to US such as employment, residence etc. but employment-based green cards may not attract much questioning. On the other hand, If your GC is employment-based, you'll have to stick a little longer with your employer, but DV does not require anything like that. The category also may make a difference in seeking certain jobs; showing that you have E1x may open more doors than DVx. This is my opinion, I do not know of any actual experiences.

I wholeheartedly agree, us AOSers very much appreciate the value of a DV green card :D

With years geen card changed color from pink to brown and then to true green. It is now much fresher than before and much tastier. However, DV GC lottery program has a real problem compared to other GC programs - it starts in October, and by the time the of spring (really fresh fruity juicy green grass) the program is already half a year old. That means it is one of the worst kinds of green card possible in terms of freshness. DV lottery is also called Cinderella GC. Not only it is half fresh by spring time, it is also completely expired by the end of September, which gives it absolutely rotten taste by that time.

Lolz!!

Well, guys, the other day I read somewhere that the US people look down at DV Green Card holders. They have some hard time when they join universities and other companies. They say that the intention behind inviting the dv winners to come to US is to fill the lower wage jobs, and the dv green card holders are not expected to compete with the higher class of the people. Anyways, I myself think that is no difference at all among the GC's, and I personally think that dv the DV green card is the best one, because one does not need any petitioner, or employee etc to get. Also, it takes less time to get the DV green card. Thanks for your comments, friend!!!

In the end all depends on the credentials you're able to show, many DV-winners doing AOS (and consequently already here in the US) hold master or doctorate degrees and are here as J1, F1, H1B, O1, etc. So for sure many of them are able to show attractive resumes and references compared to most of those doing CP. In other words (and as a general rule known by anyone), the jobs you'd be able to get depend mostly on the work area you target and the education level you're able to show.

Pryanik :)

There is certainly opposition to the whole Green Card Lottery in the US, no argument there. When you think about it, it is a bizarre visa. I doubt any other country has something similar. Some Americans don't like it because they feel it cheapens the whole immigration process, degrading it to the level of picking names out of a hat, instead of the foreigner actively having to pursue it and prove their worth. The qualifications for the DV are pretty low, compared to many other visas. And some Americans don't like that it allows in people from countries that have a deeply hostile anti-American stance, so they have fear due to that.

I don't agree that DV holders are "looked down upon", I think it's more likely a case of the American just not liking the whole concept of the Green Card Lottery. As far as having a hard time joining universities or companies, I wonder if what you read was the opinion of the DV holder who blamed that anti-GC Lottery attitude for their problems. Not everyone is going to have an easy time once they land in the US. Jobs aren't going to fall in their lap because many Americans are having great difficulty finding work too. The economy is still not all that good. And if all you have is high school education, then it'll be even harder. It's not just DV holders.

I would just like to say that Americans in general don't know what immigration categories are there so they look at immigrants as a whole sector of the population not by GC category. What's more most Americans don't know what a green card or permanent residency is just because it is something that they are not familiar with since they don't need to deal with on a daily basis... They'll just categorize you as an Indian, Chinese, Italian, German, Arabic, or whatever your origins are. You'll notice this when you start living here.
