Hello,

I just wanted to share with the forum the following summary of DV Case number processing dates from the visa bulletin. I have included graphs that detail each region and highlighted when all case numbers became current in green. Thi is an Excel file with tabs at the bottom for each region.

Thanks Catseyes for providing this info, i just included info upto June 2008.

Regards

Nice graphs. What do you mean when all case number became current?

I'm kinda new in this DV Case number thing. When it said "CURRENT" on the visa bulletin, is that mean that the rest of the case numbers will get called for interview?

For example, in July 07, the cut off number for EU is 23,000. Then, in August and September 07, it says "CURRENT. Is that mean that in August and September 07, everyone with CN above 23,000 will be scheduled for interview?

Can someone explain how this works? I thought "CURRENT" means that the visa is exhausted and there are no more visa left, and everyone with CN above 23,000 won't get called for interview.

Hi
“Current” status means that whoever is eligible for the diversity visa can obtain an visa number during that time period.

For example, if a person’s case number is AF48000 in August and the bulletin says all cases are current, it means that the person is then eligible to process their green card application at that time if his number wasn’t called sooner. This is the time period for anyone whose number wasn’t previously called to take advantage and complete their application for permanent residence. The disadvantage persons with high numbers like my wife face is that the “Current” status is usually within the last one or two months of the DV Fiscal year hence if there were 300 more spaces left to hit the 50,000 visas available, and you were the 301th person applying for your visa there wont be a visa number available to you. Or processing might delay beyond September 30th then you are automatically disqualified.

Any more views on this?

That clears up a bit. So, we can assume that if you're number is above the last cut off point (when it said "CURRENT"), you're fighting over the left over visa with people that have high CN?

Where do you get the number for the maximum CN, like 70,000 for AF and 20,000 for AS? If this accurate then..in 2007, everyone with CN from EU above 23,000, which was about 47,000 people, had to fight over the left over visa.

It seems unfair that they announced CN that high, that many, but those people with high CN will only have small chance of getting the visa.

...What do you mean when all case number became current?

...When it said "CURRENT" on the visa bulletin, is that mean that the rest of the case numbers will get called for interview?

...Can someone explain how this works? ...

I will try to explain, so here goes...

A case number (hereafter CN) is current when it falls within the range of numbers being processed by the current visa bulletin.

Here is a link to the current visa bulletin as of May 21st, 2008.

I will use Africa's Case #'s as an example. If you scroll down to section "B" & "C", you will see that -:

1.) for June, only CN's UP TO AF00032000 will be processed.
2.) for July, all CN's UP TO AF00038050 will be processed.
3.) if your CN is 6000 i.e. AF00006000, your case will already be considered current by November, 2007....all the way to Sep 30th 2008.
4.) using example 3, AF00006000 WILL NOT BE CURRENT in October 2007, but is CURRENT in November, 2007

What does this all mean? The word "current" is used to imply that a case number is within the range of numbers between zero and the limit indicated in the CURRENT bulletin. Usually, in the months of Aug & Sep, the state.gov site shows most boxes in the DV grid with the word "current" implying that all case #'s that have not been called can now compete for CONSULAR PROCESSING appointments, or send in their I-485 for AOS.

I hope that loooooong explanation helped.:)

Thanks for the explanation, TNDV2008.

I wonder how many visa usually left when they stop announcing cut off numbers, and just say "CURRENT". Just wondering how come in some years they say "CURRENT" earlier than the other years. Is that means they are telling us that they are reaching visa quota of that particular region and it is not worth putting any more cut off number? hmmm...

You r welcome.

Why bother wondering?? You are spending too much energy trying to decipher things that are beyond your control. All you need to focus on is when your number becomes current, and at that time, ACT FAST.

There is no need to wonder about how many visas are left. it's like trying to figure out how many seats are remaining in the airplane, when you dont even know if the airplane will arrive at your airport. FOCUS on getting ON the plane...the seat allocation will be taken care of by attendant.

Thanks! Great analogy. :D

DV 2009 selectee!

Thanks to all you guys out here who have been doing a great job of helping people with the Dv process.

My questions is; am a nigeria and my case number is AFxxx12---
based on past experiences it seems that it may become current by may 2009?

Should i send back my DS230& DSP 122 now or wait and i saw somewhere where TNDV2008 said he emailed his response to the NL

Please can some one help Here?

Thanks "bibokeyo " this is such a good statics graph ~
However, I am just wondering how did you get the CURRENT number
into a figure of AS 20000 or AF 70000

When "current" is stated, is the second letter mailed to everybody who has not received it yet, to inform the visa appointment in the embassy?
Or the winners should apply for an embassy appointment?
I mean if they state "current" who decide who can have visa interview? the winner? the embassy? KCC?

On the graphs, the numbers highlighted in green graph that the numbers for that month are current. It is not an exact figure I just chose to use these number to illustrate that all number in that month are available for processing. It can be more or less, but I believe that the limits i used encompass all availble numbers

Tolu,

When to send the DS230 & DSP122 really depends on your personal situation.

Assuming you are already in US and have a NON-IMMIGRANT VISA (NIV) that does not allow "desire to emigrate to the US" and at some point before your number is current, you may need to leave the US, then you have to strategically "play the cards" so that you dont mess up your request for a renewal of such NIV status.

If you have H1B, or are outside the US, then there is no need to "strategically" plan when to respond to the DV 1st NL.

I sincerely hope I have not confused you even more, so basically, if u r still in Nigeria, then go ahead, send them now. Good Luck!!

Benji, check this link, you will have a sense of where the numbers came from.

Visa Bulletin

Remember, u can search on the state.gov site for "current visa bulletin" and locate the desired month & year to review the volume being processed at that time.

No one can ABSOLUTELY predict exactly when it will be current, but rest assured that the date ranges you observed will give you a rough guestimate on when your number might be current

Yes of course!, U can fill out the forms online, and even better, the forms on state.gov ARE THE ONLY ONES to use. u should be fine with forms expiring in 2010 :) Rememeber to print several copies.
