I'm selected for further processing, also have low number, but due to some change in circumstances i no longer wish to migrate to USA, atleast for next 2-3yrs.

my question is, is it possible to apply for immigration visa, stay in US for few weeks till i get my greencard, than come back to my country for few years? does this make the grencard invalid? after getting greencard how long can i stay outside US? Also is it necessary to be in US to get greencard?

If your situation is such that you no longer wish to live in the US, don't bother to process your selection.

However, if it's a situation of wanting to attend to things back home, such as taking care of stuff, whatever that may be, and you're certain you definitely still wish to live in the US, then go ahead and complete the process.

You can apply for a re-entry permit which has a 2-year validity. This enables to stay back in your home country without jeopardizing your GC. Be aware though, you'll still be required to file US taxes during those 2 years you'll be away from the US.

A few weeks may not be enough to receive the actual/plastic GC itself. And no, you're not required to be physically present to receive the GC.

Hello! This is my first post in this forum, and I would like to thank everyone, especially the super-moderators, for the very helpful and detailed info you kindly provide here.

I can’t wait to move permanently to the US and to consider the United States my home. However, there is a possibility that for personal reasons I would need to travel abroad during the first three years after the activation at the POE. According to your knowledge, do you think it would be preferable to:

1) Leave the US 2 weeks after the POE, return after 11 months and apply for a 2-year re-entry permit, or
2) Immediately apply for a re-entry permit just after the activation (which I understand would require staying a few weeks until the biometrics) and then apply for another one 2 years later?

Many thanks for your feedback!

Option 2.
