Documents to carry when entering the USA

Hello everyone.

I'm a DV 2012 lottery winner; I did my interview at the Italian consulate on Febraury 8th, and have successfully received my visa (a.k.a. temporary I551, a.k.a. temporary Green Card). I will enter the US in June or July.

I'm wondering: which (if any) of the documents I provided to the consulate do I need to carry at the border control/immigration office when entering the US?

So far, what I understood is that I absolutely need to carry:
1) my passport;
2) the white sleeve from the physician;
3) the yellow "do-not-open" sleeve from the consulate;
4) my vaccinations record.

I'm wondering if I need the police records, military history, education diplomas...

Regards,
Gabriele

All you will need is your passport with your immigrant visa inside and the yellow do not open envelope that was returned to you with you visa. Make sure you take the envelope in your carry on luggage as you need to present it to the officers when you are taken to secondary interviewing. This contains copies of all the documents (medical, police check, education etc) that you presented at your immigrant interview. These will be kept on file by USCIS. You should have received instructions when your passport was sent back to you with the envelope, but just to clarify these are the only two things that you need. Best of luck

The italian consulate does not send the passport and the yellow envelope by mail anymore; thay hand them to a Mailboxes Etc. nearby, where you go to collect them (or have them sent to your home). They did not include instructions.

In any case, thank you so much for your answer! Expecially the university diploma is very large in Italy, and annoying to carry around.

I have just another doubt, regarding the SSN. I checked the request for the SSN on form DS-230, but it looks like you still have to remember the officials at the immigration office to forward the request to the SSN Administration. In case this special procedure fails, and one needs to request the SSN the standard way, a birth certificate is required. So it might be a good idea to carry at least the birth certificate with me, isn't it?

Regards,
Gabriele

Gabrielle,

since you are moving to another country, I advise you to take ALL your important documents that might be required for any number of reasons and procedures. It would be quite a hassle if you suddenly needed your birth certificate or some other official document and had to ask for it from Italy, wasting time and money. Even if your diploma is too big, I suggest you carry it with you, for example. Having the documents that are probably in the envelope is advisable, because the envelope is for CIS, and you should have the originals with you anyway for other things.

Second Interview at POE?

Did u say a second interview at POE ? Please clarify ie sample of the kind of questions to be asked. If you want to change your POE what is the process and will u be asked why you are changing POE at the new POE?

Sounds like a sensible suggestion.

Which forms will I have to fill in at the immigration office when entering the US ? The I-485 one?

Regards,
Gabriele

It is a formality and nothing to be worried about. the officer at the first POE will escort you to Secondary Inspection and will hand in your yellow envelope and passport. You will be called up to have your fingerprint taken for your green card and then another officer will open up your yellow envelope to check your documents, your passport will be returned and you will be on your way

I would advise to bring all your documents that you presented at your immigrant interview to the United States in case you ever seen them but when I went to the Social Security Office they were able to do everything simply with the immigrant visa in my passport

No, you only need to fill in form 6059B which is the customs deceleration form. You can also line up in the Citizen/Permanent Resident or Permanent Resident Line. Depending on your Port of Entry it varies if these are separate or combined

I-485 form is an Application for Permanent Residence which is what you will automatically have once you have finished in Secondary Inspection :)

Also in case you didn't know Form 6059B Customs Deceleration will be handed out by the stewardesses on your flight to the USA
