Do I use the RTD as a passport?

I may be asking the obvious, but I wanted to know....

Does one use the RTD as an actual passport to travel to other countries? I understand that one uses it to get back into the states.... but when I travel to another country do I just show the RTD as my actual passport?

When I go to a consulate and get a visa, does the consulate stamp it on the RTD instead of my passport? There is no need to take my home country passport abroad?

Please advise so that I can understand.....

Thanks

PEDRO

Dear pedrop!
You only need a valid RTD with appropriate visa for the country that you are visiting. That is it. You do not need any other document (take your american ID such as driver's licence for extra assurance)

most countries accept the RTD if they follow the UN convention of 1951. There are few exceptions to that. For example, UAE does not accept that.

RTD serves as a passport. People granted asylum are not expected to use their national passports.
