Hello,
New here. I am looking into obtaining a job in California. I have a 7 year old child and a dependant mother. I know that my son can come in with me, can my mother obtain a TD visa with me as well?

thanks in advance

Okay then is there a way to have her sponsered by me. I was told that she could come in as my same sex partner?

There is a provision for her to visit you long-term, however this still requires her to maintain a full-fledged home in canada. Domestic "co-habiters" are allowed long-term entry on B2 status to accompany TNs, H1's etc , but that still means they must maintain a home in canada throughout the entire time in US (unlike the TN or TD).

That doesn't really help your situation, does it?

See:
http://travel.state.gov/visa/laws/telegrams/telegrams_1414.html

Cdn citizens would not have to get a "visa" for this. Entry under the terms described in the memo would simply be requested at the border.

Actually that may help alot. As long as she can stay long term, there's no problem having get an apartment in Canada and maintain that as her home address.
Thanks!

TRC, the classification is family meber in this case, not same-sex partner. Same regs apply.

@TRC,
"Same-sex partner" actually refers to "same-gender partner". Just because it's been erroneously termed as "same-sex" it doesn't mean that sponsor and dependant need to engage in sexual intercourse. Too much Internet, I guess.

It's too sad that you call an absurdity the purpose of supporting one's parents (in this case her mother), whereas gates are wide open for the still questionable concept of gay couples.

Thank you UScit1ab and nelsona for your support. I amend the statement to same-gender. TRC, seriously? I was actually told this by an immigration lawyer for a company I was looking at. So as a moderator maybe you should have asked where the information came from before going on the offensive.

Actually, "gender" is primarily a grammatical term, as in the feminine or masculine gender of a noun or pronoun. "Sex" is the correct term to differentiate males and females. No need to amend anything. Gender has been hi-jacked as a "softer" word for sex, since "sex" now also refers to "the act".

As I said, the same reg that allows family members otherwise ineligible for dependant status (like parents and siblings) entry in B2, allows the non-working person in the same-sex couple the same privilege, like it or not.

"Partner" implies some level of romantic relationship which is incompatible with a parent/child relationship.

It's sad that you consider it reasonable to claim a parent as a romantic partner.

TRC this is my thread and I do not appreciate you acting like a snot here. Go bother someone you petty little person.
