How do I prove to an US agency that I left the US within the limits of my J1 (I did, but the officer took my I-94 when I left).
 
Return tickets or stamp in your passport when you reentered your home (or any other) country.
 
Unfortunately, this was over 5 years ago, so I don't have the return ticket. Also, my home country (germany) did not stamp my passport upon re-entry. They never do.
 
my impression was that the departure information would be entered into the system by the port authorities once you leave US (i.e once the I94 is taken from your passport at the port of exit), so all US agencies will have these info on file.
