DETROIT — Federal agents say they've recovered more than 20,000 pieces of mail from a suburban Detroit postal carrier who stored them in his car, kitchen and garage instead of delivering them.

Thirty-seven-year-old James Stempnik Jr. of Clinton Township was charged Monday with delaying and stealing mail.

Postal agents said they found government checks, utility bills and court documents, some a year old. A motive is not known.

A Postal Service spokeswoman says none of the mail was opened and all pieces should be delivered by the end of the week.

Stempnik did not return a message seeking comment.

The charges came three months after another Michigan carrier who couldn't keep up with her route was placed on probation for a similar crime.

Wow Im happy I dont live there but here where I live the mail is always soooo slow and sometimes they don't come by.....makes me think!

This is really weird. I am suprised it didn't make it on the list of weird stories from MI. Unless he suffers from the Newman syndrome, "he doesn't work when it rains....:) In this case, it must have been raining for a year in D city...

Man I havent recvd anything in mail for last 3 or 4 days {Excluding Sunday} I will send a test mail to myself and see if I recv something if not I am in trouble... Dang, Can happen to anyone, anywhere... Thanks Anazouine for the story

That's one of the reasons I will only use a PO box. Hard to hide the stuff there.

I remember reading about a similar thing many years back but I think there were a group of deliverers and they were throwing mail in dumpsters. None of those were ever delivered after they caught the guys. At least the mail in this case was still deliverable, albeit a late. :)

Mail can be an unfriendly too!!! It is heavy, it doesn't say much, except to be in a small vehicle or bicycle riding alone. You worry about a vicious dog coming to bite the living daylights out of you, so end up delivering it to a nearest dumpster and hope the recepients are familiar with dumpster diving..:D If they investigate this fellow some more, I suspect some ID theft was going on, wait till the people find out what he did with their mail... He should be ashamed of himself..:(. I think they stop delivering mail to him as a punishment....

Guys,

True story: when I worked for one of the major overnight delivery companies (I wont disclose their names to protect their honor), one of our delivery guys opened all the packages on his truck and started storing stuff in his garage in preparation for the Christams period. Why go shop when you have atruck full of Xmas gifts right? He got busted when people from the same zip code started complaining they were not getting their packages. :)
