CP while staying in the U.S.? Is it possible?

Hello,

I am a graduate student in the U.S., and my case number is EU 20xxx. Since it is a little bit high, I'd like to do CP. However, I'll be studying in the U.S. at the time of the interview in my home country. Can I do CP in this case? Basically, I will send all of my documents from here to the embassy in Turkey. I will go to Turkey for the appointment only, and come back to continue my education.

Thanks in advance.

Your case number is not that high...you could easily do AOS. If you choose to do CP you will have to book a flight back home after you receive the interview date which means you have to book a flight almost last minute which will be expensive...

bentlebee, thank you for your response. do i need to take care of anything else (paperwork, application, informing KCC or embassy etc.) except the flight ticket?

Follow the instruction. Fill out DS/DSP forms and send them to KCC with photos. Start to collect documents as described in the instruction in preparation for coming interview. Not all documents at this point. Wait for 2nd NL. Once you get 2nd NL, follow the instruction and collect all the documents you need for your interview except medicals. Go to your country and do medicals at a designated hospital/clinic. It may take one day/a few days/a few weeks depending on the policy of the hospital/requirement of your case. Take an interview. That's it. Good Luck!!

Hi tmfl,

I saw your case of DV2010 and have some questions to ask you. Thanks!
I want to make sure that because I am currently in the United States with F1 Visa, is it ok to send DS/DSP forms back to KCC with new address of the United States, but will do CP and take an interview in my country? I am going to graduate from school this year, so CP is better for me. Can you share your experience to me? Thanks in advance.

Don't worry. CP is available no matter where you live. I would suggest to write US mailing address where you currently stay. KCC accepts changes/correction of information on DS/DSP forms. Right after you move to your country or any other places including US, write a letter to KCC to let them know your new address. KCC will put your letter in your case file, and after your CN becomes current (about one month- less than 2 months before "current" month), all of your file will be transferred to local US Embassy, and KCC will send 2nd NL to your updated address. In case your 2nd NL is possibly lost on the way, you have to claim it, then KCC will send it to you via Email. Good Luck!

Thanks tmfl!! Another question is that after I change the current address to local American address on the form and tell them I will do the interview in my country, which address did you receive the interview notice in your case? And do you know that if I send the forms back to KCC from US address a little bit late, like 20 days after I received 1st NL, will that affect my chance to get interview appointment? Or it doesn't matter how fast you send the forms back to KCC because only your case number will affect your chance to have interview appointment..
Thanks again!!

Despite what others are saying, I do not recommend doing AOS! The reason being is that there are tens (if not 100s) of thousands other GC applicants in the US who are also trying to get their GC approved before September 30 deadline (i'm not sure if this deadline applies to them also, but it certainly does for DV winners).

One example is my close friend: He was a winner of DV2009: didnt want to go back home trying to save money and all, because he had a family of 5... so he did AOS and sure enough his application got delayed: meantime he had an excellent job offer which he missed because of the delay in the process, luckily he got his GC couple weeks before the Sep 30 deadline. His CN was at 18,000. So, my recommendation is do not do AOS if you want your GC!!!

1) KCC will send 2nd NL to the mailing address which you entered in the form sent back to KCC, no matter what address you entered on DV Lottery sheet. If you enter US address you will get it at your US address no matter where your interview will be taken.

2)In general, submission of the form in June or July will not affect your chance. As for my case, my interview was done a month after current month, possibly because I submitted the form in June. If I could send the form in May (which was not possible), KCC could assign the date in October 2009. It appears to take around 12 weeks to process each case in KCC until the case gets "ready to assign interview date".

is this information reliable? this is the first time i heard AOS is really really bad idea!

If you want to take the less risky option, I suggest doing CP.

I think it was in DV2007 that the 20XXXs only became current in July or August (check archived visa bulletins). It has been better since, but there is no guarantee that your number will become current soon enough to do AOS.

I was on F1, Turkish, 19XXX, did CP in Ankara in April 2008. Everthing went smoothly. I personally know another person, exactly same situation, who did CP in April 2010, again with no issues.
