Converting from TN to B2? or something?

Due to job loss, TN was cancelled and we were advised by lawyer to drive to the border and apply for change of status to B2 10 days later.

I have now been told that this advice was wrong, and that we should have mailed in form when job ended to apply for change of status and stayed put in the US to wait for it.

We are assuming the TN was withdrawn last week, and have job interviews lined up in both countries. Also have a car with US plates.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If we drive up and hand in TN card, can we come back as Canadian visitors? (and tell them we reside in Canada) can we get B2 at the border? or 90 day waiver?
 
Rob is incorrect about mail in, since you need to be in a valid status to do this. Your only option is a border TN. You will not be readmitted easily as B2. Don't lie at the border please.

How many different places are you posting these q's.
 
We went up to Canada for an interview and drove back.

We were told that the TN/TDs do not have to be handed in. There is nothing in writing, but reasonable time to wrap up affairs, look for a new job....etc and until such time the TN/TD are still valid.

If and when we do exit (in reasonable time of course) we hand them in to the Canadians as we exit. We can still come back as visitors if necessary.
 
You were very lucky, as your TN and TD are absolutely NOT valid.

I think the heat must have addled that guys brain, but it helped you.

Don't count on that again.

What POE were you at where you were given this information? You wouldn't happen to remember the officers name would you? :)
