Successful CP @ Mumbai 11/28/01
Our CP went off very smooth @ Mumbai 11/28/01. Thanks to the discussions I followed regularly here, I pretty much knew
how things would go, and they went exactly like the others I read about.
Docs given for primary applicant : Passport, medical reports, 3 photos, Birth & marriage certs, employer letter, DS230\'s,
IRS9003.
Docs for wife & son : Passport, medical reports, 3 photos, Birth and/or marriage certs, I-134, DS230\'s & IRS9003.
I wasted $116 getting immigration photos made at Sears before leaving. The Mumbai consulate does this for Rs.200 each
and DOES NOT accept US photos. Please carry DS230\'s instead of the older OF230\'s. Please also note that the address
on the DS230 question 13 should be your address in India. They\'ll make you change it if it isnt. Having a notarized I-134 for
dependents is ESSENTIAL for EB cases, so do it in the US before leaving. Please carry one photocopy of each document.
The initial wait after entering the consulate & paying fees is about 3 hrs. We got our photos made while waiting. First we were called for doc submission. Another half hour later was the interview with the vice consul. The questions were very
simple (you had better know the answers to these) - who is petitioning for you? when did you join them? what is your
position? what kind of job do you perform? where did you graduate from? what was your major? Finally we took the oath
and signed the bottom part of DS230 part II. After paying the balance fees, I came out and gave a rowdy whistle to let off
some steam!
The following items are not allowed on the consulate premises - purses, soft or hard bags (please use a plastic shopping
bag to carry your documents) and any other electronic items, cameras etc.
Please check your immigrant visa paper (on the front of the packet) very carefully for correctness, and let them know asap.
There have been cases of mis-spelled names, marriages being annulled (i.e wife being shown as single) etc
POE was San Francisco on 1/2/02. On looking at the visa packets the officer asked me what was the waiver given to me
for? I said I wasnt told anything by the consulate, and this is what they gave me - I didnt know what waiver he was talking of.
After a shrug the officer took a fingerprint & signature for me and my wife only (not for my son), and finally affixed the I-551
(provisional permanent residence permit) stamp on all our passports. The Green card can be expected in 6-12 months.
