Does not matter. Because OP's case is just one case. And when it is just one case, it is gamble. Lawer's advice can only be two: apply and not apply
and outcome is just citizenship or no citizenship. You can not be partially naturalized depend on seriouness.

By the way, what is the big deal? Here? If your application is denied, you
only lose $ 675. if deportation happens, leave the country. My take is
that one should not live a deportable life.

So the OP has the following options but no more:

(1) Do not do anything live with the GC carrying all the risk including USCIS find out the citizenship claim anyhow
(2) Apply for citizenship without mentioning the incidence
(3) Apply for citizenship with mentioning the incident
(4) Just leave the country and give up GC let alone potential citizenship

Bobsmyth, on the link you provided, do you know how they found out the guy once claimed to be a USC and received benefits. I am wondering how did they find this out.
Just curious….( any speculators on this ). It is unlikely they check the university records..

No idea how it came to their attention. Likely the USCIS investigative unit found out about it since he was under a removal order.

Does anyone know if the USCIS checks the DMV facility to see if you claimed to be a US citizen? If so, does the DMV facility check the status against any agency? Do they ask at the Chicago facility? Does anyone know?

They don't do such check unless they already know somethings that call for such need.

Are you talking about the chicago facilities only or in general? Anyway thanks for the save. I checked the DMV website for chicago, and no where does it state you have to provide your US status. I was about to go to the facility and find out, and open a can of worms I probably would have difficulty closing.

Proof of birth does include a lot of immigration forms...(including citizenship docs)

All depends what document what did you provide at the time of your DL appication. My point is that you can not just claim you are USC status n IL DL application, you need to provide some form of document proof for your status....I hope you did not suppliment your USC claim with false documents...

Now it is practical matter if USCIS checks state DL databases to the application level detail...I am not sure may be they are connected under some kind of DHS framework

God NO!, I would not provide false information. When I went to renew my license I couldnt remember if they asked me if I was a citizen. Im just being specitcal for no reason, but still I would wonder if they have a means of checking our status.

In case of DMV, I do not think people claim being a USC. What usually happens is that some DMVs ask people to register to vote in the same form - either at the time of license renewal, or at the time of an address change. A wrong check in a hurry, and congratulations you are now registered to vote. This can be construed as claiming to be USC (actually there may be a fine print to that effect - however, I never read the fine print since the implications of registering were obvious to me). There was also a case of a person recently claiming that he/she never checked the box and the DMV clerk made the mistake (this can only be proven by looking at the form which is submitted by a person).

In CA, I have seen DMV being very nit-picky and not giving you a license until they are satisfied as to your legal presence (they expire the license the same day as your visa/I94/GC expiry date if you are not a citizen). In such DMVs/states, even erroneously declaring a USC status should be unlikely, but you never know.

If USCIS need to do a DMV check then they should modify N400 to add
the this please states where you have been issued drive license and give DL numbers. Of course they can check with SSN and your name but most likely they would still ask for your DL number or at least all state you have been
given a DL.
