Does anyone know if we can apply for naturalization based on the date of ‘approved for asylum’ rather than the date GC?

When you look on your GC,it says ''Resident since DATE''.The countdown for citizenship runs from that date to 4 years and 9 months. If it was based on asylum grant, lot of us would be already citizens.

Thanks for your reply; do you think a 'class action' to demand our right to be naturalized based on asylum approved date is worth the trouble?

Calling for our GCs to be backdated on our asylum grant date or one year from the grant of asylum would help us apply early for naturalization.

iam going to apply soon

i got my GC on aug 17 2005,

my card is backdated one year resident since aug 17 2004,
i was granted asylum asylum feb 2000,

iam going to try to apply for naturalization very soon,

its a gamble , it may work , it may not,

at least its a try

Only refugees get their GC back-dated to the date they enter the US!

Correct. And their GC processing time is a third of the time it takes to process asylees. So sometimes they have to wait to apply for citizenship as well.

I talked to my lawyer today. he said that asylees can apply for naturalization 3 years and 9 months from the date on their GC. He gave me a reference to the law and I've trying to locate it since this morning. When I find additional info I'll keep you all posted.

Did you hear about returning the GC to CIS because of wrong dates on cards?

It takes 4 years and 9 months(5 years by law) for a PR who's not a result of a marriage to a US citizen,to apply for citizenship. Now as a result of a 1 year backdating of your GC as asylee,a period time remaining in your clock is 3 years and 9 months. This is a reason why your lawyer asked you to apply after 3 years and 9 months.About returning GC to NSC,we can say the uscis system is out of control, cause it's a big mistake receiving those kind of mails from NSC.If you receive a mail requesting you to return a card, just ignore it and say fuck to NSC.

my lawyer asked me to apply after 3 years and 9 months from the date on the GC, which means the period time remaining after receiving the GC is 2 years and 9 months. I've been trying to validate what he told me and serach the Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations, but found nothing so far.
