Citizenship Question

I am a Canadian citizen living in the USA. I am a expecting a child in next few months. Would the child be automatically Canadian or do I have to apply for his citizenship, passport? Would his Canadian citizenship effects his American citizenship in anyway as he would be American by birth?
Your input will be highly appreciated

-- Your child IS cdn because you are cdn at the time of his birth. But you need to apply for the proof of his cdn citizenship - which is the citizenship card(certificate). Once you get it, then you can apply for the cdn passport (if you care). FYI: According to Passport Canada, cdn passport is not the proof of cdn citizenship. You show your birth certificate (or citizenship certificate) as a proof of cdn citizenship to get the cdn passport.

Would his Canadian citizenship effects his American citizenship in anyway as he would be American by birth?

-- No, none of his citizenships will be affected; he can keep both citizenships...

Imrk,
Your child will be a dual citizen (at least dual) at birth. You will need to apply for proof of Canadian citizenship for your child.

Thank you Guys, now just out of curiosity, is it wise to be citizenship of more than two countries? I am a Pakistani and have three citizenships. Should I surrender my Pakistani citizenship and get the Foreign Origin Card? I don’t want to be in legal trouble by being citizen of 3 countries.

Imrk,
As long as all three countries who citizenship you possess, allow their citizens to hold other citizenships, you are good.
I can tell you for sure that Pakistan has no issues with your other two citizenships. Canada has no issues either. What is your third citizenship?

You can possess a NICOP, POC or a Pakistani passport. I have both a NICOP and a Pakistani passport. I can enter Pakistan on my Pakistani passport, or I can use my Canadian/US passport with NICOP.

well, not really. I know many people who went to school in Canada and became canadian but then looked for better jobs in USA when IT was booming.
so you would find a lot of people with 3 citizenships, It would have been lot of indians but indian dont allow dual citizenship.
Is there anything we supposed to do as Canadian while we are living aboard like calling embassy or CIC?

Imrk,
I registered myself with the Chicago Canadian Consulate General when I moved here in 2003. They call me every six months to verify my home and work numbers, address, status in the US, etc. Now that I have become a US citizen, I better let them know the next time they call me.
