Hi all,
First of all, Thank you for all your support and altruism.
I paid my dues yesterday, and now I am done with being a red headed step child.
After pleasantries are done, I was asked to take an oath to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. After I am seated, she asked for my GC, ID and passport. Then she started rummaging through for my Birth Certificate in the big pile of documents which includes the papers I submitted for my first H1B about 12 years ago, but to no avail. Then she asked me if I carried one. I assured her that I submitted one for my GC, but I did not have one right at that moment. She said to herself "Had they missed that doc, they would have asked you to bring one to the interview. It must have been buried in this pile somewhere. Let me use your passport to confirm your DOB." At that moment, I sighed and felt relieved because she did not asked me to make another come back to the same office next month. She was very mellow and friendly. Then she asked me if the name on the GC and the name I mentioned in the N-400 are one and the same. I said that my middle name was not mentioned in the GC, but wondered aloud why it was‘t. Then she said it's probably because they printed the name listed on my H1B. But she assured me that I can have my full name on my naturalization certificate just like I had on my ID and my passport.
After that she opened my N-400 form and started going over each line item including what was my SSN number. After she repeated everything I mentioned on the N-400 and confirmed that I did not change my positions from the time I submitted it 3 months ago. I assured her that nothing changed. Since I had two traffic tickets, I checked the part where I was cited/arrested etc. And I also wrote the reason why I checked it on N-400 application. She realized I only had traffic citations; she did not ask me for any supportive docs, although I prepared to give them had she asked for them. After that she asked me to take the Civics test:
1)Name one branch or part of the Govt
2)We elect senators for how many years?
3)If both president and vice president no longer serve, who becomes next president?
4)what does the president's cabinet do?
5)How many justices are on Supreme court?
6) What did the Declaration of Independence do?
Then she asked me to read a sentence "When is Columbus Day?" And right after that, she asked me to write "Columbus day is in October." Then she congratulated me and asked me to sign N-400 paper and two Photos with my regular signature (not the full name). Then she inquired if I can make the 1.30 PM ceremony and handed over N-445 (Oath ceremony paper) suggesting me to complete the questions on the back of that paper and sign it with address and date. While I was going through that doc, she took my passport and went out to make a copy of it. After she came back she asked me if I have any questions for her. After that she confided in me that she wanted to visit my native country and asked for suggestions when and where she should go and visit places. She also asked for good restaurants that offer the cuisine from my country.
In the end, she congratulated me again, we parted our ways.
It was about one hour affair to complete the oath ceremony. We were given a packet with very good info on what it means to complete this journey and who were the famous naturalized citizens from various countries, and what to do after we stepped out of that room in regards to SSN and Voter registration etc. There were about 55 people from 31 countries on that day who were bestowed upon the naturalization certificate. After the completion of the ceremony, we were given naturalization certificate and allowed us to hang around and take pictures and ask questions and to offer suggestions.
Because I am in a hurry to run errands, I bid adeu to USCIS once and for all (hopefully) and went on my way.
I wish you all the best and thank you for having offered your shoulder.
Regards.
