I got my GC in Jan 2005. Lived in the US from 2005 - early 2008. In early 2008 had to move to India to work first for a US company, got laid off and then could not find a job in the US, so am working for a subsidiary of a US company in India. I have traveled back to the US every 6 months, although only for 2 weeks at a time. I have filed taxes as a resident, maintain my bank accounts. I wish to apply for citizenship. My question is - Do i have to be physically present in the US 3 months prior to starting the citizenship process to prove residency in a state. Also, what other things i can do to prove that i intent on moving back to the US, once i am able to get a job in the US. Does buying a house in the US help? There is a chance that i can work out of the US office for an extended period of time (6-8 months) - would that help my case?

Thanks,
Nidhi

I have used my friend's address as my permanent address in the US for all my bank accounts, cell phone accounts and tax returns. My husband (altough we have been separated) lives in the US. I can buy a property if that helps my case.

Your back and forth travel for trips just under 6 months since 2008 along with your lack of sufficient US residency ties will likely be deemed a break in continuous residency for naturalization purposes. Also, using a friend's address does not esthablish US residency ties. If you continue this pattern of back and forth travel with insufficient US residency ties you risk loosing your GC status let alone not be eligible for naturalization.

I can buy a property if that helps my case.
If you bought the house before going away to India, and kept it throughout, that would have helped. But buying it at the end of a long series of consecutive trips isn't likely to help much.

Continuous residence in cases like yours will boil down to the discretion of the IO. So when you have moved back to the US and stayed for several months, apply and see what happens.
