Taking a job in India before the process is done will jeopardize your citizenship. Foreign employment is a big no-no, unless it's a short-term project with a specific end date and/or you're sent overseas by a US company.

Thanks very much for your reply. Is the intent of the law that I have to be a resident in the US when the citizenship is approved? If so, I am assuming that a short-term project implies that I'll be returning back to my US residence while taking up a job in another country implies that I have decided not to be a resident of the US anymore. Please let me know if my interpretation is accurate.

The requirement is to continue to be a US resident throughout the entire process until oath day.

That's right.

Thanks again for your reply.

I forgot to mention a few more things. I plan to have my home in the US through out the whole process (and my family will be here). I will be on the US payroll for about 4 1/2 months (starting now) and then switch to the MNC's india operation's payroll. I plan to maintain my US residence during the citizenship process (I am guessing about 4 months from application to oath) of 4 to 6 months and will be traveling back and forth.

Given this scenario, from the point of the law, my residence is still in the US and my citizenship process should not have any issues I think. Please let me know if my interpretation is right.

Thanks for your time.

Under those conditions, you'll probably be approved. However, if they suspect that your work overseas is actually the precursor of a permanent relocation abroad, and not a temporary assignment after which you'll return to the US, they could ask for confirmation from your employer about the purpose the trip and when you are expected to return to the US for good. And that could lead to complications or denial if becomes apparent that you're really in the early stages of a permanent relocation.
