My kids who are 14 and 16 years age who have GC expiring in 6 months and so as my GC too. We all wanted to apply Citizenship ASAP. The sites making me confused on kids application details (not sure which form I should submit for them). They are born outside USA and they are living in USA from the age one onwards.

I am confused which option I should take (renew GC or apply Citizenship) due to time crunch and uncertainity of USCIS decisions though I have all clean history.

Please advise.

Thanks,Sri

People under 18 cannot apply for naturalization. Rather, if either parent (who the permanent resident kids are living with in the US) becomes a US citizen before they turn 18, they automatically become US citizens, without needing to do anything.

Thank you. How do I get proof of citizenship status for kids, if they automatically become US citizens before 18 years. I am filing N-400 and it might take a while (may be 6 months plus), by the time I receive Citizenship status my kids and my GC's will expire. What should be my next move? Please advise!!!

Your Certificate of Naturalization + proof of their permanent residency (e.g. green card) + marriage certificate or other proof they live with you will be enough proof of US citizenship for them to apply for US passports.

As long as they accept your N-400, it doesn't matter if your GC expires; you can get an I-551 stamp in the meantime. I am not sure whether they will accept an N-400 for a green card that is close to expiring; if not, you will have to apply to renew it first.

For your kids, they could renew the GC, or, they could let it expire and just get a US passport when and if they automatically become US citizens.
