Citizen application and student visa abroad!

I have a weird question. I am in the process of applying for citizenship and, I am admitted to study in a University in Montreal, Quebec for Spring 2008. In case I did not get the citizenship then, what should I do? Can I leave the US for studying abroad and maintain my application for citizenship and my green card? Also, I was thinking of moving somewhere near the American-Canadian border and commute every day. Would you think that this could be possible in order not to lose my status?

Thank you!!

As long as you keep your residential ties in the US you should be fine either way. The NY border is only 45 min away from Montreal so living in update NY may be an option you may want to consider.

Ok, but what ties can I keep? My immediate family is not in the States (I just have cousins) and I would not be paying rent. What proof can I give?

Your monthly bills, credit card transactions, etc. If you have a house then it's a great proof. Otherwise you can't stay outta US for more than 6 months in a single trip. The last thing you could do is start making 2-3 months short trips from US to Canada and keep record of everything like toll receipts and credit cards transaction so that you could prove you didn't abondon the permanent residence....

USCIS has a history of being fairly lenient with US LPRs studying abroad. You should be ok, but keep proof of return travel, your course transcripts/semester dates, and if possible evidence of immediate family remaining in the US.

And make sure they don't consider you for a national security case analysis, because you would be a perfect training sample. Remember, you are coming in and out of the country every day without strong family support and you are still a foreigner.-

I have the same problem- studying abroad- but I am still only an LPR. By the way, in the ADDRESSES field, would I have to show my permanent address on file AND my addresses abroad, or just the address on file?
