Hi,

I became a US Citizen a few weeks ago at Newark, NJ....but did not request a name change then...now, I am planning to legally change my name....could someone please list the steps / things to do for changing the first name in New jersey...and also how much time would this entire process take..

Also, what would be the steps required to change the drivers license, US passport and other documents after that....

Thanks much.

Wow. That's a lot more complicated than doing it through naturalization. And expensive ... $200 + $50 + the cost of publishing in the newspaper. From reading that document it would appear that doing the name change in New Jersey outside of naturalization results in at least as much delay as if the name change was done within the naturalization process.

To change the name on your driver license, you must go to the DMV in person and show them your original name change certificate. To change tha name on your passport, you'd have to follow the steps outlined here: http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/ChangeName/ChangeName_851.html

As far as other documents (credit cards, utility bills, mortgage/lease, loans) are concerned, contact their respective issuers and find out what their policies for name change are. When I changed my last name, one of my credit cards was able to do it over the phone, after asking me a series of questions to verify my identity, and another asked me to mail/fax them a copy of my name change certificate.
