Dear Friends,,,I'm new in this forum,,,my case was removing proceeding from Asylum and now I'm married to my husband a USC.I got Approved from I130 it took about 3 months(approved on Feb'2007). Now just waiting for approval to reopen and than base on being married.

I'm confused on when i can changes my last name on SS and DL.
Can i take I130 approved to change or do i need to apply I765(w.p) to change it?

Anybody w/ similar case as me ? How long did it take to approved reopen case and apply for I485 ? is there usual amount of time this takes ?

Thanks in advance,,,,,!!!!

If its only changes, i'm sure you can go with your husband to change the name on your SS card, then only can you change the name on your DL.
Go to the SS office with your husbad, mariage certifivate, passport, visa, and all immiration receipts tha you have applied for.

Try the DMV first and then the SSA. That is how it worked for my wife and I, all you will need is passport, driver's license and marriage certificate.

No the DMV requires u're SSN before they can process your DL. so you have to have your SS card change first before DMV can do anything for you. Else if you go ther your new name does not match the number thy hav on file for you, they will sent you home or call the INS for you right there thinking you are an illegal alien,,,lol..
it happen to a friend of min in Elpaso, texas, but he was taken to the INS ofice for fingerprinting and was release after about 2 hours..... yep funny stuff in this country...
thats why I insist you go with your husband who is a USC.. incase anything goes wrong.

She already has a SSN though, that and a marriage certificate (and passport to prove identity) should be enough to change your DL name.

No not for a foreigner... your name change should firts be cleared by the USCIS before the DMV. so since she has already fileed documents with USCIS, they now have her record the nextstep is SSN, then finally the DMV.

Thanks so much to you guys for the advice,,,finally i will go w/ my husband to both offices but i think go to ss first and than to DL,,,

Atlanta is 4 u...

Good! how do you like Atlanta, GA ? :) I am thinking of moving there.

Praet,

If you like traffic jam, then ATL will be a lovely place for you. :) Also, if you would like to live in a nice suburb...then ATL will be the place for you. Heat is excessive.....just in front of hell's gate I suppose....:p

I like the growth and business oportunities in Atlanta, but the weather is scary, I am actaully thinking about Nashville TN, or Newyork suberbs...lol..

I went to school in Atlanta from 2001-2004. Weather is horrible, traffic is bad, jobs pay low, people are unfriendly and not a good place for a recent college grad. I left Atl end of 04 and since then I lived in New York (1yr), London (1.5 yrs) and currently living in LA. Over the years, I keep regreting why in the world I spent 4 yrs of my life in a miserable place like Atlanta.

Its a big NO from me. The above is based on my personal experience and opinion. It also depends on your situation too.....where are u moving from.....if you have no other better choice.......what type of job u r getting there and so forth.

right now I live in the middle of nowhere Alabama. So a step to a bigger city is welcome. Either Huntsville, Birmingham or Atlanta.

I went down to DMW couple of weeks to get a California driver's license since my last license from New York expired back in 2005. DMV told me they could not validate my date of birth as on SS record. Since their system is connected with SS. They asked to change the wrong DOB on my SS first.

I went down to the local SS office where I found my DOB is infact totally wrong. When I told the SS officer that needs correction, then she started asking me questions like if I am a Citizen....why do I need to change it since I am on visitors visa.....and so forth. Since all my applications are still pending, I could not specific reason.

The lady asked me to bring my birth cert. to change the DOB details but I never went back. I am waiting for my EAD or GC appoint letters before I visit the SS office again.

I dont want to take any chances right now and get in trouble

There are no chances... just change your SSN with your Birth Certificate. Better than being asked for your SSC at the interview and seeing it with a different DOB than your applications... allowing more questioning!
