I'm on a valid TN status yet but went for my renewal ahead of time yesterday. I was easily able to proof i had no Immigration intentions and then All the problems started when the officer asked me for a copy of my contract, having read many forums and on CBP's sites, I was on the understanding that TN's has no such thing as a Renewal and we are actually re-applying for the status, so any contracts wouldn't be valid beyond the current visa's validity.

I'm sure I should had a copy of my contract with me but then he started looking into my educational background and actually pulled up a copy of the NAFTA classifications, can he refuse my TN because of educational background even if it was approved before?

Technically, each entry on TN is subject to readjudication, although there is never any need to supply original petition documents when merely passing thru. They made copies of your original petition documents when your first applied, they can find them if they wish.

Your "contract" is not a required document for getting your previous TN, so I don't know why he would be asking for that, other than to establish that you are actually still working, which the fact you were renewing should have made obvious.
