With green card arriving finally, I am planning to visit Canada soon. My question is whether I can visit Canada and come back to the U.S. with only green card, my national passport is expired.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience.

It depends on how you are travelling. If it's by air, yes you definitely need a passport or in your case a RTD. If it 's by land, you can show your id and green card, adn you should be OK. Beginning Jan 2008, you will need a passport or a RTD by land as well!

I think MTGRL is confused a little. By Air, yes you would need a passport. By land, no matter when, be it 2008 or 2020, as long as you have a GC, you will not need a RTD or any passport.

The US state dept is even considering addign a "Pass card" which would be for U.S Citizens only and look like a GC...which would be used without a Passport when crossing land borders. Its still up in the air, if it would be used for air travel within Mexico, Bermuda, Canada etc...

MGTgrl and Want, thank you for your answers. So all I need is a Green Card, alright!

Canada is only five hours' drive from my home, I will drive there to avoid any complication.

Want, I don't think I am confused. I agree that the US state dept is considering a "Pass Card" for US citizens because people who go from US to Canada and vice versa frequently complained when the new law came out . The new law said that from Jan 1 2008 everybody needs a passport even by land. I even saw it on CNN last year. There are people who commute to Canada or to here everyday and requiring them to have a passport was going to be costly, so they decided to come up with a "pass card". If the US citizens need a pass card or a passport, do you we think we can just go with our GC?

Here is some info (this is for US citizens), but I think it explains the new law:
As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security

MTGIRL, It says US Citizens. It doesnt say ALL travellers need a passport.

In the past US Citizens could cross borders with their birth certificates....So this doesnt apply to us because we have a GC and we are not U.S Citizens. GC is considered valid without a passport when travelling by road...no passport would be needed now or in the future(by road) if you have a GC.

The passport requirement is ONLY for U.S Citizens, all other travelers already used their passport to travel by AIR anyways.

Green Card is considered a valid ID when traveling by air or ground . The new rule only applies to US Citizens. If you have a Green Card you do not need a passport to go to Canada by AIR or GROUND.

I got a reply from Canada Consulate in Seattle

Here is the email:
Lawful permanent residents of the U.S. with valid green cards do not require visas to visit or transit Canada. If you are travelling to Canada by air, you will require your green card and a valid passport. If you are travelling by land or sea, your green card alone will suffice until the end of this year.

This definitely answers your question, but did they say anything about what happens after the end of this year? I think that's what the debate is here. I am just curious.

That is the email in its entirety, we should be able to find out more when it is close to the end of 07 when they iron out more details, either by the US or Canada side.

I was under impression that we do not need passport or RTD when entering Canada, but need it on the way back - to show to the US officer. Isn't it so? And I mean the land travel.

Great! That works for me. Do they ask the LPR about the reason why they went to Canada?

That's correct, they'll only ask you on the way back, your GC and ask you how long the trip was and may be some general customs questions. Their is nothing changed travelling through land and by Ferry to Canada with a GC.
