Can I travel with valid Indian visa and no surrender cert (or canceled Indian passport)?

Hi,

I have a valid visa in my US Passport and had not canceled my Indian passport. I am traveling to India in a few days and just found out about the Surrender certificate. Can I travel in this situation, or will I be hassled at the Indian port of entry? Are they demanding to see a canceled passport or surrender cert?

I plan to get the surrender cert done on return, just trying to avoid the hassle of running to NY before my travel.

------even if you have canceled passport tell them it is not with you as it is not needed and you did not read in any news paper or News that one need to carry canceled Indian passport if one has valid visa in US passport.

---- If they ask about SC then ask them "what is surrender certificate"? from where to get that and how to get? ask them from where in India you should get surrender certificate ??

-------------you can do it later and when you go to India you don't know what is surrender certificate and you don't check consulate sites as you have valid visa.
