I know some of you might be thinking why would someone want to do this...well, here is the situation:

I was planning to visit India next week (I have already bought my tickets), and use my AP for my return. My I485 was approved Feb. 18. Based on some earlier posts on this site it may take a week to get the approval notices. Is my AP still valid? Or, should I wait to get my approval notice and get my passport stamped before I travel?

You can not travel using AP, once your GC is approved. Wait for the approval and get it stamped.

You can travel without stamping as you can plead ignorance about getting the approval before leaving. Not everyone checks the status online.

I know a case where the applicant went for stamping (2/16/04 at Philly) and got it based on the printed copy of his online approval status - no personal or lawyer approval copy. He did tell the person on the counter that there is a family marriage in two days.

Best of luck.

BTW, How long is the approval valid till you get your passport stamped?

Travelling and re-entering using the AP after the GC is approved depends on your tolerance for risk. Unless you absolutely have no choice, you are far better off getting the I-551 stamp in the passport rather than depending on the goodwill of the POE personnel.

Approval in itself should not have any impact- unless you get stamped. By the act of stamping you are accepting formally. So till stamping AP would work. After stamping- AP is irrelavent.
