Can I get an AP from local USCIS office?

Hi,
I was originally under impression that my AP expires on Feb 18th of 07.
Based on that I already made plans for my travel.
I noticed that it is expiring on Jan 18th of 07.

I am about to apply for the renewal. I guess the its very unlikely that I would get the renewal approved before Dec 28th when I am going to leave on my travel.

Can I walk into a local USCIS office and request for an extension of AP?
Has anyone gone through this?

I appreciate any help in this regard.
