I got my GC approval and passport stamped last month. However I am now out of a job. I do not have the GC ( the IIO said it could take 8 months to come) Can I claim unemployment in the meantime?

Thanks in advance for any answers..

Grin and bear it

I heard previously that some GC applicants out of work managed to file unemployment benefits. I dont have anything against this and I think its just proper since they already paid a substantial amount of tax that the government benefitted from. But, as I have mentioned before, the law of the land is biased against the immigrants, regardless of whether they contributed to the growing of the economy or not. I guess you could go ahead but you could be joepardizing the status of your GC application, since you are revealing federally tht you are unemployed and the GC application law says you should be employed by hook or by crook at the time they are abjudicating your case which could be the time when recession is full-blown and everybody is getting laid-off. Now isnt that an ideal time to get rid of immigrants competing against the useless, lazy, bitching citizen which doesnt want immigrants in the first place, even though those are the same people that paid for their welfare when the economy is in boom?

Did you see there is anitem in your I-485 apllication: Did you accept any forms of support from the goverment? That means if you take the benefit then you'll 100% lose your GC. trust me, they will find out.

I had also initially posted the same topic last month, since I have also been out of job for 7 months and I have EAD status. Infact I had also registered but then after that I did lot of research and found that when you claim unemployment it gets notified to the immigration authorities. So, I never followed up to claim unemployment. My best guess is that try to manage without claiming benefits.

Try not to claim unemployment and do your best to find a job.
Besides you got your GC stamp already. If you want, its a time for you to go on vacation or back to your homeland to visit relatives and friends. Else, try your best to find one. BTW, I think you can work on a less salary job in the meantime... :)

Thanks much for all your replies. So it looks like I can claim unemployment only after getting the GC in hand, even though it has been stamped on the passport? I know some people who are claiming unemployment with GC.

By the way any idea on how long it takes to get the GC after stamping on Passport these days?
