Can I apply for SSN while I-485 is pending?

I filed for I-485 through my son after he got the citizenship. Can I apply for social security number before receive the green card approval? My visa has expired long time ago. I'm out of status now.

SSA will only issue an SSN if you are eligible to work. Once you get your EAD, then you can apply.
