Can I apply for GC in US and then leave US?

Hello,

My question is if I start my GC process through my employer and then I leave US for an year in between what happens to my GC process that I started.?

Basically I am planning to start my GC process in the next 2-3 months and then I have to go to Australia for more then one year. What happens to my GC process in between?

If someone can kindly explain? Thanks.
 
You can file I-140 and then do consular processing after it has been approved and you are ready to return to the US.
