Greetings everyone,

I have been reading the forums for quite some time and I have gathered great info from here. My info is as follows:
LIN-00-115

Asylum granted March-1998

Applied for permanent residence i-485 March-2000
received date May-2000

1st FP May-2004

Biographical and medical exam (i-693) June-2005
Biograph and med exam received by INS on July-18-2005

Permanent residence approved on July-25-2005
Received letter of approval on July 30th

Now, the letter says that I should hear from them in less than 60 days, I want to know if I will have to do the biometrics or just wait for the plastic GC to arrive by mail??

++ One more thing, for anyone living in NJ or NY, I will go to the DMV to get my license, I will present my passport with i-94, social security card, university id w/ photo+transcripts, plus proof of residence, however, my passport expired in the year 2001.
Is the i-94 still valid even though my passport is expired?
The only other type of ID I have is the Employment authorization card which expired on sept/2004.

Thank you in advance,

Make an infopass appointment at infopass.uscis.gov and choose option that you received an approval (I-797) letter.

There they will stamp you for temporary GC and take your biometrics for the actual card.

Hi wantmygcnow,

where are they going to put the stamp? My only passport is expired and to get a passport from my country i would have to wait 2 months.
I will make the appoinment for the biometrics though so, I do not waste more
time.

thanks for the info

Its ok dont renew your passport. Take your expired passport, they will give you a temporary green card with picture. Just make the appointment and take your passport and 2 photos for a temp card. You are already approved so enjoy..the rest is easy for you.

hi chat, please take the plastic GC when u actually have it when going to the DMV. because if u do not present ur GC. they gonna consider u only got is a EAD card, which gonna give u a big-ass red letters on the driver`s lincense says "tempoary visitor until ......"according to ur EAD expire date/// if u take GC, u will have no any restriction ...this is for NYS.

Chactow,

As far as the NJ dmv is concerned, you will be fine with the documents that you have. If your EAD is expired, don't take it with you. It really depends on which DMV you go to in NJ. If you go to the one in Jersey City, they are pretty well informed of asylees and their situations. Others might limit the validity of your D/L to when the EAD expires which is not right. The I-94 itself is worth 4 points and you don't need to show a National Passport because it is in the same category as the I-94 and is also worth 4 points. If you have the transcripts w/ college ID, that's worth 2 points. And the SS card is worth 1 point and you're in the clear with 7 points and you only need 6. You must then show a proof of address and you can show them your letter of approval of your Green Card that you received or a bank statement or credit card bill.

You might be better off waiting for your actual green card to come in before you go visit the DMV unless you really need or renew a license. Congratulations and good luck at the DMV. They "privatized" them so wait time has been dramatically reduced. It only took me 10 mins to do my registration. Now, THAT's hot.

Hello everyone,
Thank you for the replies and info.

So, I went to the DMV in NJ (RAHWAY station) and I was denied the permit because they said that my asylum granted i-94 expired in the year 1999.

my i-94 says

ASYLUM STATUS
granted pursuant to
section 208(c) INA.
Valid to___3-17-99___
EMPLOYMENT
AUTHORIZED
NYC 3-18-98

they said that my asylum status expired in 1999 and I am no longer able to get the license. I showed them the i-797 and they said that it does not have a date of approval, just a notice date.

now i'm left with waiting for the biometrics and get the goddamn GC and i dont know when I will get the appointment.

thats the story,

later
