Can an H1 holder work as a consultant for a foreign company

I am holding an H1 visa of institution X. Recently, my ex-employer, a foreign institution Y wants me to do some consultancy for them and they are going to pay me accordingly. Am I allowed to take that offer? Do I have to inform somebody about this?

If you are going to be paid in US dollars and expect a W-2 (or similar docuemnt), you will be violating the H1 norms and might be deported.
