B2 extension

Hi:

I plan to file a 6 month extenions for my parents (they are in B2 visa). I wonder if I need send in the original passport or the copies are fine. I did not not any trustable reference on this issue. Could some kindly let me (it will be great to point out the reference too). From reading the instruction of I-539, it appears I should send the original of I-94. Is that true?
