Hi, I have a question regarding a valid entry to the US with my visa.
I have a valid b1/b2 visa, and I have been to the United States three times. I will be going to a University, and according to my new F1 visa, I can enter the country on Aug 1. I nevertheless want to enter the USA in July as a tourist.
The question is, can I enter the US with my b1/b2 visa in July as a visitor and then switch my status while being in the US to a "foreign student" to be on my F1 visa. Do I do that through ISN in America? I want to make sure that I am not breaking any rules.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

I think there are clear regulations prohibiting someone from changing status to F1. You will have to obtain a visa abroad before you can be admitted into US on F1.

B1 to F1

H1/H4 to F1 is very easy with in USA.

f you are coming with B1 and changing with in 3 months to F1 gives INS suspicious to reject it.

You are just having I-20 not F1, F1 is stamped in your passport outside USA.

ok, yes, you can change your status from b1/2 to F-1. However, currently this procedure takes anywhere from 4 to 12 months. You will not be able to enroll in school until your status has been changed.

now, if you already got an F-1 visa valid from August, just wait till August and enter on it. Or is it your I-20 that's valid from August and you didn't get a visa yet? You don't want additional trouble and paperwork and waiting time and a possibility of rejection when changing status. Not everyone who applies for a change of status from B to F gets a permission to do so.
