B Category Visa for Mom

Hi folks

I have read this forum under B category visa and found it very informative. Hence I decided to seek opinion on my problem.

I am going to US on a L1 visa .... and my stay should be nearly an year.

I have been given to understand that I cannot take my mom on L2 as for purposes of L2 mother is not an eligible dependent. Hence, the option is to apply under B category visa.

Just to give u a very brief background about my mom
- She is a Central Govt servant, still serving.
- Has property in co-ownership
- Decent bank balance
- Widow, husband expired in 2006

Now I have couple of questions ....

1. I am scheduled for a departure from India sometime in Jan07, can my mom apply for B Visa to go with along with me or do I need to go there and then invite her ? . Preference would be to - take her along with me.

2. What category of B visa gets applicable to her B1 or B2.

In fact, initially I was worried as to B visa can be had only for 6 months on single entry but I read experiences where in people have had extensions to visa for another 6 months.... was very encouraging. (thx to the informative forum)

Would appreciate any help on questions above.

Thx n regards

Karira,
Your mother can apply before you leave or after you leave for the US. Her application will be successful if she can convince the US consul that she intends to leave the US after her temporary visit. If she applies before you leave, she will not have to state that she has a daughter living in the US (works for her). However she needs to state her purpose of visit to the US (may work against her). If she applies after you leave, she has a solid reason to visit the US but your presence in the US may work against her too. Does she have other kids who live permanently in India or are you her only kid?
Good luck to your mother.

Thx so much Saif for ur response !!

I have a sister who is married and stays in Mumbai.

I am just confused between 2 things
1. should i apply for her visa before leaving, so that I can take her along or
2. should i go there and then invite her

i m just wondering which is a better option.... ultimately i want her to spend atleast 6 months with me in US so that I can take her around places and show her US. This would be her first international trip.

Any guidance is truly appreciated

Regards

Karira,
As I stated in my previous post, both approaches are doable but both have their up and down sides. Seeing this is her first trip outside India, I personally would advise you to go there alone. You will need a few months to settle down and know the place. I am assuming this is your first trip to the US, if not, I apologise. Once that is taken care of, you will be in a much better position to "play host" to your mother. This is my personal opinion, you may think otherwise.
