At this point, I don´t know what is an issue

Hi there,
I’m completely muddled up with all the forms and the never ending story of the green card. I thought I was at the end of the process and for what I’ve been reading in the forum, I’m just starting.
I´m trying to get a Green Card based in employement. I’m under a H1B visa in the fourth year.
My employer says that he is doing as much as he can to get it done, but I’m so confused that I don’t really know if what he says is true.
I’ve what looks like an I-140 approved (I-797, notice type: Approval Notice, Skilled worker or professional), date August 17, 2006. But it follows saying:
The above petition has been approved. The petition indicates that the person for whom you are petitioning is in the United States and will apply for adjustment of status. The information submitted with the petition shows that the person for whom you are petitioning is not eligible to file an adjustment of status application at this time…”
After that form, I don’t think anything else has been done because we are waiting for the priority date to arrive or something like that (I understand a little bit less each day, about all this immigration stuff and I’m kind of desperate)
Should I do the I-485? Or not? Or what?
Which is the next step? Any advice?
I’m sorry to be asking basic things but I cannot find a place to see how it works the whole process. Any link?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You can not apply for AOS (I-485) now because your priority date is not current. So you have to wait, and extend your H to the maximum (6 years) and since your I-140 already approved you can extend the H beyond that till the priority date will be current.
