Hi

Very informative blog.

Wanted some help. Applied for asylum. Got interviewed early February 2010, asked to provide additional info at interview which I did within 5 days. Told to appear for decision after two weeks but AO calls my lawyer and says he will mail decision.

It has been more that two months. Can I call the AO and ask about my case? Writing a letter and going to the front desk seems useless. Any ideas.

You have to be patient. I waited for almost 6 months to get the initial decision.

@didihaile: do u mind sharing what kind of additional info/documents that AO requested you to submit? and are u in valid status?

@assylum Do you have any idea why it took 6 months?

No, I didn't have any idea why it took 6 months. Their response was "case is pending".

I waited 6 months for the recommended approval and another 6 months for the final approval. I had 2 interviews and the officers were very nice to me. I am so thankful to them. They gave me a safe land to live in.

Keep praying and you will be fine. God bless you.

@didihaile: no need to be anxious. You are authorized to live in the US as long as your asylum application is pending

@assylum: Were u in valid or out of status when you filed your asylum application?

Can one talk to the AO? Telephone kind of thing if it is possible. Does the lawyer have access to the AO?

Get proactive. Tell your lawyer to wake up and find out what is going on with the case. Make an infopass or go to where you were interviewed and find out what is going on. USCIS is very disorganized. Therefore stay on their heels but don't be irritating.

Hi everyone! I have pretty much the same problem. Was interviewed in the middle of Feb. Since that time have not heard anything from the officer. Almost 3 weeks ago sent and faxed a status inquiry (the official form). Although they are given 15 days to respond, they haven't sent me any info on my case. Is there any other way to check on my case? didihaile please keep me uptated; I will post any changes regarding status of my case. We are probably supposed to receive the decision almost simultaneously. thanks!

You can go it your asylum office is close. You can also write a letter to ask for an update on your case status. If you are in status I think it may take more time to recieve your decision than if you are out of status.

I did write a letter; moreover, I used the official form which says, "the answer will be mailed to you within 15 days". That wasn't much of help. When you call them, the answering machine says, "we do not provide any information regarding your case status by phone. Send us a letter". I do understand that they might be busy, but I don't understand why some applicant's receive the decision in 2-3 weeks while others are waiting for months or even years (I am not talking about in status or out of status staff). Take the "Asylum Approved" post as an example. There must be something else than just being busy. Anyways, it seems the only choise we have left if to be patient. Good luck with your case! Let me know if you have any changes. I will as well! I hope we will be rewarded for our patience.

Took six months of anxiety and got approved. No explanation, no nothing just an approval letter so go figure. Glad it is over but the wait was PAINFUL.
