Asylee. Cannot get Social Security Number

I am derivative asylee who went to SSA office in NYC few days after receiving I-94 card and was told that information on it does not match with DHS records.

I was told that before SSN can be issued they have to do manual verification with DHS, and processing time for that is THREE MONTHS (yes, 3 months).

What can be done about that?

The SS office uses the online verification system called "SAVE". This system is updated immediately if you have a biometric cards such as GC, EAD, RTD, etc.
I-94 information gets added to this system manually and sometimes it takes time. This is why the SS office was unable to see it in "SAVE" system.

If you already have an EAD based on your derivative asylum status, then ask them to use it to verify your status. Otherwise, you have to wait.

And the government states that I am eligible for bunch of benefits through Office of Refugee Resettlement, but only 1 month from the date grant of asylum. I must have SSN to apply for them. And the government refuses to issue SSN to me on time. Do you see catch-22 here?

There is also 3 months wait for EAD.

When you apply for the social security number they will give you a letter that states your request for SSN; that is enough to apply for benefits.

asaf, how does applying for benefits work by the way? My mom (Derivative asylee) got to the States like 3 months ago. Does she qualify for any medicare or anything? She's diabetic and I don't even know what to do about it. I've heard that medical insurance is really high.

The government did not refuse to issue SSN to you. They just need to follow a procedure to verify your status. They will send the SS card after they verify your status. You should get a letter that shows your SSN application is pending.

ofcourse she did, go to the catholic charity office in your area, and they will tell you for what benefits she is eligible, but you better hurry because the benefits are for a limited period of time. good luck
