Question:
Is it criminal to make an appointment to get a Passport at Regional agency before you have your interview given the fact that you are traveling 2 days after your Nat interview with new status or with GC? Obviously if you failed, you would have to forgo the trip? Thoughts anyone?

You can't submit a passport application if you're not a US citizen. You can fill out the application before becoming a citizen, but you can only submit the application once you are a citizen.

It is not crime to make an appointment, but you will not get a US passport until you take an oath to become a US citizen after interview. You can travel after the interview using gc and your foreign passport if you haven't gotten an oath yet.

I think making an appointment is OK. Does any law say making
an passport appointment is claiming to be a US citizen? I don't
think so. You are making anpointment because you are going to
become a citizen and you can cancel the appointment if you do not
go thru the oath.

So I don't see anything wrong.

No, not illegal.

But as has been mentioned you will not get a passport as the application requires you Certificate of Naturalization and if you ain't got that you ain't got an application. :D

You can apply for an expedited passport the same day as the Oath, and may be able to pick it up the next day. I think it adds another 60-bucks to the $75 application fee.

Many USPS office requires three days in advance for passport application.
So if your oath is Oct 15, then you can not apply for passport at that USPS office until Oct 18. But if you make an appointment on Oct 12 for Oct 15.
You cna go to that USPS to apply for a US passport right after the oath.

Therefore it saves you 3 days of time

[Obviously] do not sign the passport application until you goto passport agency. I am assuming you are with a DO where interview and oath is on same day. You dont have to forgo trip if you failed (unlikely), as you can use your GC for travel. They do not take GC at interview, they take it at Oath where they are supposed to give you Nat Cert.

The only potential problem I see with trying to schedule an appointment before your oath is the possibility of the passport center agent asking you if you are a US citizen, to which of course you'd have to answer no.

I think passport agency (if they are like the customer service national passport service) wont have problem if you tell them 'I will take Nat Oath on (date) and as I have travel coming up, I need to apply for passport on same day, can I have an appointment please...'.

The OP stated "Regional agency" I took that to mean Passport Office and not a Post Office. At the Passport Office it is even possible to get the passport the same day if you get in there early enough. At worst it is next day.

Probably all moot as the OP also mentions traveling after his Interview which would be well before the Oath anyway. He would do that travel with his GC and current country passport.

atlanta offers same day oath as well. so if all goes well, NO Passport agency on Oct. 6, Canada on Thursday!

Passport agency does not ask whether you are a citizen - it is an automated system 24/7, unless you want to talk to them for some exception.

Post office has never asked for citizenship while booking appointment - I have done this 5 times so far (over a decade - for kids).

Take the appointment for after oath and if you get oath and certificate, you can go there. If you don't get same day oath OR interview is not successful, you can use your GC and original country passport to travel.

Isn't the service touch tone? Or does one speak to a live agent? I applied for my passport at my local post office and have thus never used the service.

From what sanjoseaug20 mentioned it's an automated service that never asks you if you are a citizen, so it's a non issue.

Brian,

Brian,

What else you are Waiting for?

The passport card, then I have it ALL!! :D

I decided to document everything as a complete time-line to give others a guide on the entire process. I did all of my stuff at the normal pace, no special delivery or FedEx, no expediting, no request for different appointment dates or times. Just went with the flow.

Champagne is in the fridge! :)
