applying visitor visa w/o sponsor

Hi,

Is it possible to apply for visitor visa w/o any sponsor? The people applying for visa have ample cash (8-9 Lakh India Rs) in bank. They can get letter of invitation from their relatives in USA. However they can't get sponsor documents. They did not have group travel confirmation either.

The consulate in question is Mumbai consulate. If anyone has obtained/denied the visitor visa in these situations, or have the information ... please comment. Thanks.
 
For some reason that I cannot determine, there is a fairly common notion on this forum that visit visas need sponsors. They do not. As TRC has replied, all B-1/2 visas are self-sponsored.
