My husband and I are awaiting our naturalisation soon. I would like to know how to apply for my son's passport after we become citizens. Should he be physically present in the US at the time of applying? He is a legal Green card holder. Replies will be really appreciated.

Can anyone please tell me if my son aged 16 yrs who is a green card holder, needs to be physically present in the US in order to apply for his US passport, once my husband and I become citizens?

He needs to be physically present in the US, living your physical and legal custody, to derive citizenship from you. And then he has to physically show up to apply for a US passport at a post office or passport agency ... except if he left the US after deriving citizenship but without a passport*, he could apply for the passport at a US consulate overseas.

*US citizens are not supposed to leave the US without a passport or WHTI-compliant document, but I have never heard of that rule being enforced, so long as they present the passport or other acceptable travel document when reentering the US.

To get US passprt he must be a US citizen, to get US citizenship he must be present in US to take oath.

Is the kid residing abroad? How can he be a permanent resident of the US and live permanently abroad. It boggles the mind.
