applying for SSN, supporting docs needed

My wife has switched from h4 to h1. Her visa is approved now. My question is what documents would be needed to apply for SSN. Also in the Chicago area is anybody aware how long it's taking to get the SSN.

I find it hard to beleive that you can't work until you have an SSN. How does that work out for people who get their H1 in India and come to US to work? Do they have to come to US, and wait for SSN before begining to work?

Usually SSN takes 2 - 4 weeks if all the details are transfered to USCIS system to SS system.
Docuement Required: Passport , H1 approval notice and I 94.

My wife's last name was changed after she entered US, and her visa was applied under the new name. Does that cause any problems as far as SSN goes?

If the name in the passport and visa stamped on the pp are the same then no problem.

Otherwise you should have legal document to prove your name change.
