Applying for H1B Extension while in INDIA

Hi,
I am in INDIA on a project till June 2007 and my 8th year ext expires in the first week of jan 2007. Should I be in US to apply for my 9th year ext or Can I apply from INDIA itself? Since I anyway have to get new visa stamped in INDIA because of my stay here till Jun 2007(my current on expires on Jan 2007), just wondering if it is possible to apply from india.
Please gurus, anyhelp is very much appreciated.
 
To get your H1 extn you must have your valid I 94 to prove your status in US.

I do not think, you can have an I 94 while you are out side US.

You MUST be in the US to file H1B extension

You MUST be in the US to file H1B extension and should not leave US, until extension is approved.

Options are:
1. Come to the US for 2-3 weeks, file H1B extension with premium processing
and after extension approval, you can leave US
2. Stay in India until 1year outside US. Get a fresh H1 (good for another upto 6 years)
 
Thanks a lot for your inputs. I was thinking my case could be something similar on the one when we initial apply for H1 before comming to US. At that time we would not need any I94. And more over since I will be getting visa stamped in INDIA, it does not matter whether I get I94 along with extension or not.
