Hi,

I became a Citizen 2 years back. I know the process and I am now applying for my father. The only problem I have is he is not good at english. How can we get Citizenship to our parents when we have this issue.

I am sure someone might have the same problem.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

He might want to take a citizenship prep course.

Also, how old is he and how long has he had his greee card?

He is 65 years old and stayed 5 years in US on Green Card. It will be very hard for him to understand the officer's english accent. How can we skip basic english and Civic test and get the Citizenship.

I do not see a way for you to get around the exams at this time.

If he waits ten more years then he can take the exams in his native language.

Now the best I can suggest is to take a prep course and hope to see an officer who has a good heart.

Thanks Thankful.

Ten years is a long time. I do not know why they can take exam in native language after 15 years.

Can we go through this route “Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions” . What is this.

This is for serious medical issues.

There is really no way to avoid the exam. Take a course and study hard.

No, unless your father is handicapped or disabled mentally and you would have to prove it with doctor records.

A rudimentary understanding of English and a basic knowledge of US history are standard requirements for becoming a citizen. There are many other people for who this aspect of citizenship is non-trivial yet they take the necessary steps to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to become a citizen. What makes you think your father is different and should be allowed to bypass these requirements?

Your father either has to learn English, or wait until he can qualify for one of the following exceptions:

http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/structure/gc_1200665502868.shtm
Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

* have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 15 years or more and are over 55 years of age;

* have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 20 years or more and are over 50 years of age; or

* have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

Thanks Guys for all these answers and for your time. I am getting some idea now.

I used to spend on this site atleast 15 min on a daily basis for my Green Card 9 years back (Year 1999) . Got my GC in Year 1999 and never visited this site again.

I do not see my old posting may be they are too old. This forum is owesome.

While on the subject of native language;
Does anyone have any experience w/ this?
My father is 74 w/ GC over 15 years; he qualifies for the native language test.
I read on the guide that if you do it in your native language you have to take your own interpreter. Are you allowed to take just anyone? Like, could I come in w/ him and possibly help him?
Thank you.
