I came to the US on a business visa in 1983, applied for my green card about three years later while I was single.
I got married to an American Citizen before receiving the green card. I did not let the immigration know that I had gotten married seeing that I wanted to get the green card on my own, not on the basis of marriage.
I received the green card in 1987. Got divorced, got married again to another American Citizen with whom I had a child who is now 17 years old. We got divorced about 16 years ago. (yip, been busy!)
I just applied for citizenship in November 2012. Went for my Citizenship interview in February 2013 after which I received a phone call stating that I got my green card as a single person when I was actually married. They requested the marriage certificate from my first marriage to verify the dates. Yes, I was married, yes I did enter as a single person, had no idea that this would be an issue. I never wanted my then husband to be able to claim he helped me enter the country. I did name him on the original green card application as my sponsor.
At this time I have not heard anything yet but from reading the reasons why other applicants got denied, I presume that fate might be mine as well.
Now the important question, if they do deny me, is my green card in jeopardy? I have a green card that is valid indefinitely, never have to renew it unlike the 10 year green cards that are issued now. Also, if I am denied, what are my chances if I appeal it? Do I need a lawyer (money is an object)?
Anxiously awaiting a response,
Thanks so much,
Ingrid
