Does applying for i-485 automatically change once status
to AOS even though one still has a valid visa?

When does one become AOS status, after using EAD or AP ?

If you are in H/L/O status you become a adjustee by using EAD. Using AP is fine and maintains H/L/O status. In non-immigrant status without dual intent you become adjustee right away.

how about my wife with non-immigrant status also?

does she lose her non-immigrant visa because i filed
concurrent filing of i-140/-1-485 and of course
i added her to i-485?

Depends. If she is on a dual intent visa (H/L/O) she remains in that status, otherwise she becomes an adjustee.

i just read this and is not the same as what you are saying.. i am now confused..

If the F-1 student applies for I-485 adjustment of status and an EAD, but does not use the EAD while the I-485 is being processed, his F-1 status is still valid and regardless of the decision about his I-485 he can remain in the US to finish his studies.
