anyone use the I-94 back lately?

I am a little confused. on one hand, there is automatic visa revalidation for less than 30 days trip from us to canada(exclude apply for visa, or from the list contries)
on the other hand, landed immigrant is required to have nonimmigrant visa to enter US.

did anyone go to canada lately and return with the valid I-94? i need to go pick up the PR card soon.

any input? Thanks
